9-16-2011 Homework

Homework due Friday before Class~ Friday's assignment: Watch 30 minutes of the news and do a news log (story, time, criteria of newsworthiness). This must be posted to your blog before class begins on Friday.

Time- Happened recently, earlier in the day

Criteria of Newsworthiness-
Significance ~ Death of parents of a 6 yr old child
Unusualness~ Murder Suicide, supposedly committed by Father who seemed happy to people
Proximity~ Happened in State of Minnesota
Prominence ~ Death of people in city
Timeliness~  Bodies Discovered Today
Human Interest~ Death of Members in Community
Story- Wife of Viking Player charger with Vehicular Homicide.
Time- Car accident took place 3 weeks ago but woman just recently turned herself in.


Story- Result of Fire in BWCA
Time- Fire started from lightening about a week ago and spread taking out major part of BWCA

Story- Minnesota University Professor Gets in on HPV vaccination debate
Time- The debate first came up on Monday at Republican Debate and U of M professor challenged Michelle Bachmann's claim

Story- Minnesota Unemployment Rate
Time- Released today

Story-Youngest Marine to recieve Medal of Honor, honored at White House
Time-Was at White House Today

Story-Frost on Ground
Time- Happened this morning

Story- Minnesota Bound reflection on Fall, leaves changing color on Sumac Trees

Notetaking on Camera Techniques


INTERVIEWING:
• What seven items should you bring with you when you are shooting an interview?
(Clocks Tick Tock Making Heads Pound Loudly)
C ~ Camera
T~ Tripod
T~ Tape
M~ Microphone
H~ Headphones
P~ Power
L~ Lights

• Shooting into a light source = Silhouette

• Where do you want your light source?
Behind the Camera
Make sure to White Balance the Camera before a shot at a new location or a shot with different lighting.

• On what object should you focus the camera?
Focus on person's nose.
• No tripod= BAD

• Date and Time= Never!!

• SP/EP
SP~ Standard Play
EP~ Extended Play

• Camera shoots in SP.

Pre-Roll~ Get a few seconds (3-5) of a shot before the shot you actually want.

Post-Roll~ Get a few seconds(3-5) of a shot after the shot you want.


CAMERA SHOTS:

***BACKGROUND: Interviewee should be at least 6-8 feet from the wall.
Interviewee is the shot, not a poster.
Needs to be Dynamic, has some depth, not plain, but doesn't distract from main focus of shot.

1 Shot= Middle of chest to a little above the head. *Microphones should be heard, not seen.

1 Shot with graphic= Middle of chest to above head slid to one side to allow room for a graphic.

2 Shot= Two people, only used for a show, anchors.

Types of Shots:

CU- Close Up
 ECU- Extreme Close Up
MS- Medium Shot

LS- Long shot
ELS- Extreme Long Shot
Rule of thirds- Imaginary lines drawn to divide a shot into thirds, and to place important elements.

CAMERA MOVEMENTS:
Tilt- Tilting Camera up and down on tripod, used when main object of shot moves.


Pan- Moving camera side to side, used to follow movement of a subject.


Zoom- getting closer or farther shot.


Dolly- Moving Camera on wheels.

LIGHTS:
Key- Main bright light that comes from the front, usually off to the side, can be attached to camera.


Fill- Fills in shadows.


Back- Separates person from background.



MICROPHONES:
Unidirectional- picks up from one direction, picks up sound from specific direction it's being pointed.


Omnidirectional- Picks up sound from all directions, microphone on top of camera is omnidirectional.


Cardoid- shaped like heart, also unidirectional.


Lav/Lapel Microphone- Microphone most commonly used for interviews, attached to shirt.


Boom Microphone- unidirectional mic used with multiple people.

9-13-2011 Notes

10 Steps to Writing a Story – Broadcast Journalism

1. Find a Topic.
-know your audience
-needs to be newsworthy
-balance

2. Find an Angle.
-determine questions

3. Collect Information.
-get background info

4. Conduct the Interviews.
-interview 3 people(experts)
-ask each person at least 3 questions
-ask open ended questions(not yes or no questions, question should start with why or how)
-get a soundbite~a piece of audio that can stand on it's own

5. Shoot your reporter Stand-Up.
-the one time the reporter shows up on camera
-should appear in the middle
-used as transition

6. Organize your Soundbites.
-choose order and location of interviews in story
-choose best soundbite(s) from each individual interview

7. Write Transitions in your story.
-put information between each soundbite

8. Write the "Ins" and "Outs" of your story.
-help anchors write up an intro and outro for the story

9. Collect B-Roll to add to your story (throughout steps 4-9)
-extra footage to put in story to fill space as a background pictures to some parts
-get sound of B-roll even if not all will be used

*Steps 4-8 in your story are called the A-Roll.
-focus on getting A-Roll, B-Roll comes Second

9-12-2011 Notes

Define Broadcast Journalism: Any sort of report in the News, the telling or reporting of current events that are newsworthy, through the internet, television, or radio.

Six Criteria of Newsworthiness: 
  1. Significance
  2. Unusualness
  3. Proximity
  4. Prominence
  5. Timliness
  6. Human Interest
What are the differences between print journalism and broadcast journalism?

  1. Broadcast Journalism has the ability to be more current.
  2. Print Journalism allows people to read and learn about what they want.
  3. Print can have more detail.
How is the Internet impacting broadcast journalism? 

    Internet is the best of both worlds, you can read more current news online, and ti lasts longer.
